Leaf Removal & Leaf Management in Anderson, Indiana

There are three ways to deal with a yard full of leaves, and the right one depends on how deep they are and what you want done with them.

Mulched into the lawn. A mulching mower chops the leaves fine enough to fall between the grass blades, where they break down and feed the soil. It's the cheapest option and genuinely good for the turf — but only when the leaf load is light. Once they're deep, mulching just leaves a matted layer that smothers the grass.

Bagged. We rake and bag the leaves and set them at the curb for the city's yard-waste pickup. This is the middle option, and in Anderson it comes with rules worth knowing.

Hauled off. We take the leaves with us and you're done. Best for heavy leaf years, corner lots, and yards with a lot of mature trees.

How Anderson handles yard waste. The City of Anderson requires yard waste to be set out in biodegradable paper bags — not plastic, and not mixed in with your regular trash. Yard waste means leaves, grass clippings, weeds, bushes and tree branches. Tree limbs are accepted for compost if they're cut, bundled and tied: bundles of bushes and branches no more than 3 inches in diameter, no more than 4 feet long, and no more than 35 pounds each. Any bag or can that mixes trash with compost can be rejected at the compost site.

You can pick up the biodegradable bags from Municipal Development, Room 112 at City Hall (call 765-648-6213 for details), and they're generally stocked at Lowe's, Menards, Tractor Supply, grocery stores and other hardware stores around town.

There's also the Anderson Yard and Garden Recycling Center, which doesn't require you to bundle tree limbs. It won't take dirt or plastic bags, and there's a nominal fee for woody debris — but no charge for leaves and grass. Hours and contact details are on the City of Anderson Waste Services page.
